Now that we’ve been settling into our tiny beach cottage for two months, I’ve been able to turn my attention from unpacking and relearning where we keep the wine glasses, to actually decorating our new space.

Which, if you ask Paul, is no small feat. Unfortunately, I am one of those annoying people who has a terrible time visualizing how something might look. And spacial relations? Forget about it. I need to physically see our very heavy furniture in various configurations, in order to pick the one that best suits my fancy. Which means Paul (who can easily imagine what the couch would look like over there, and thinks it’s a terrible idea) has to assist me in dragging it across the room. But then, because I really can’t be certain of my decision without seeing the entire room arranged, it means the two chairs, the vintage mirrored hall table, and the coffee table need to be moved as well.

Luckily, our new home is so little, and built in such a way that it seriously limits variations on the furniture arranging front. So, we were able to settle on a configuration that first sweaty afternoon of moving, and we’ve been fairly happy since. But I haven’t mentioned anything about the art. And the mirrors. And the curtains. I’ve just now begun to consider what should go where, and Paul is stocking up on the filler/spackley stuff he uses to fill in the inevitable nail holes that will be left behind after hurricane Miranda comes through.

If you don’t have such a patient partner (love you, baby!), or don’t care to trouble yourself with all of the hair-pulling-outing and face scrunching that accompanies home decoration, consider employing the assistance of Capella Kincheloe Interior Design.

While Capella is an acclaimed up-and-coming interior designer, with high profile projects under her belt (including the Obama White House) as an alum of Michael Smith’s design firm, I first met her when we were both in eighth grade, where she was voted as having the “coolest bedroom” in our yearbook. Which was true—if I recall correctly, she had a vibrant green accent wall, and her own mini-fridge, which is obviously the height of chic in Junior High.

But now, the grown up, Atlanta-based Capella helps decorating-challenged people, from wherever they are, with her IDesign program. Using only the internet, Capella can work with clients, room by room, and give them the full benefits of an interior designer, at the fraction of the usual cost. Contact Capella for addition information. Your walls will thank you.

Miranda!  Thank you for such a nice write-up.  I had forgotten about my prestigious award, lol.  I don’t know why I needed a mini fridge!

It was my pleasure! You were clearly destined to be an interior designer!

I so relate to what you said about not being able to visualize…which is why it is quite terrifying being in the process of building a house. I am totally relying upon my team (architect, designer, builder, landscape guy) and their vision because I simply can’t picture it…luckily, my husband can!I would LOVE to know what font you used for your header…I took a calligraphy class a few years ago, and this font is very much like my natural style of calligraphy writing. I love the look!

Hi THI! The font used is Zapfino; hope that helps!
